Cozy Log Cabin

From a distinctive setting to carefully chosen pieces, our homes say a lot about who we are. The Welcome Home series is our chance to ask inspiring people how they created a space they love.

Artist Kristin Texeira sees thoughts, feelings, and even music as colours. This synesthetic ability helps her to translate memories into striking abstract paintings. “The motivation,” she says, “is to pay homage to these simple, beautiful moments in time.”

Kristin lives in upstate New York with her husband, photographer Brian Kelley (who shot these images), and their son, Rowan.

Their cabin-like home is heavy on the wood—but she finds ways to bring colour in. “I contrast with bright candlesticks, pottery with a story behind it, books with interesting covers, and whatever is still green from our garden.”

Where do you find inspiration?
In ninth grade, I started keeping track of life interactions in my sketchbooks: conversations that took place over the dinner table, eavesdropping notes if I was out and about. I kept old receipts or to-do lists or wrappers from my great aunt’s candy bowl. It’s my way of holding onto the memory of something. My paintings are born from these observations.

How do you relax?
Cook soup and a loaf of bread. Get the wood stove a-crackin’. Read in the sun.

What do you look for in your furniture?
Comfort and that it melts itself into the room like it’s always been there.

What’s your favourite piece?
The kitchen table made by Brian’s friend. He wanted to keep it pristine, but the kid has thrown some serious marks in it already. I like that the dents and imperfections will tell the story of our life.

What do you love about your Sundays pieces?
They are so sturdy and solid—you can feel the durability. And the outdoor chairs are so comfy for soaking up the sun and listening to the birds.

Any tips for adding colour into your living space?
There’s this Proust quote about how objects contain memories and they are just waiting for you to pick them up and give them life again. I think that if you gather objects that you have a connection with and place them around the home, they will relay the story of you to others. Otherwise, grab yourself some tulips.
