How to Measure for Furniture Delivery
You’ve found the piece you love. Before placing your order, there’s one small step that makes a big difference: measuring your space.
Furniture often needs to travel through entryways, hallways, elevators, or staircases before it reaches its final room. Taking a few minutes to check these spaces helps ensure everything arrives smoothly and fits exactly where you imagined it.
Here’s how to prepare.
Measure Your Space
Start with the room where the piece will live.
Map Out the Footprint
Measure the length and width of the area where the furniture will sit. A simple trick: use painter’s tape to outline the footprint on your floor. It’s an easy way to visualize how the piece will fit with the rest of the room.
Leave Room to Move
Great spaces feel open and easy to move through. Make sure there’s enough room around your furniture for everyday living—pulling out chairs, opening drawers, or simply walking comfortably through the space.
Notice the Details
Take a moment to look for anything that could affect placement, like:
• electrical outlets
• baseboard heaters
• windows and window frames
• radiators
• moldings or trim
Accounting for these now helps ensure everything fits just right.
Check the Furniture Dimensions
Once you know your room measurements, review the product dimensions. You can find these on the product page by clicking on the “Detailed Dimensions” link on the right-hand side.
The key measurements are:
Width — the distance from one side of the piece to the other
Depth — the distance from front to back
Height — the distance from the floor to the highest point
For larger pieces, our delivery team will often remove packaging on arrival—making it easier to move everything smoothly into your home.
Measure the Delivery Path
Next, think about how the piece will travel from outside your home to the final room.
Measure the full path, including:
• entryways
• hallways
• corners
• staircases
• elevators
Even one tight spot can make a difference when moving larger pieces.
Doors and Hallways
Doorways are often the narrowest point in the delivery path.
Measure the inside width and height of each doorway along the route.
Open the door fully and measure from the edge of the door to the inside frame to see the true clearance.
In hallways, look out for details that can reduce space, like door handles, light fixtures, or trim.
Staircases
If furniture needs to move up or down stairs, a few extra measurements can help.
Check:
• the width of the staircase at its narrowest point
• the space on stair landings where furniture may need to pivot
• ceiling height above the stairs
These measurements help ensure there’s enough room to maneuver larger pieces safely.
Elevators
For apartments and condos, elevators can sometimes be the tightest part of the journey.
Measure:
• elevator door width and height
• interior elevator depth
• interior height
Remember that the delivery team will need room inside the elevator along with the furniture.
Furniture-Specific Tips
Sofas
• Measure carefully if the sofa is designed on a single frame, or if it includes a chaise or extended section.
• Check the overall depth, especially in smaller rooms.
• Leave space for nearby pieces like coffee tables or side tables.
• Modular sofas can be easier to move through tight spaces since they arrive in separate sections.
Dining Tables
• Leave enough space to pull chairs out comfortably.
• Make sure there’s room to walk around the table easily.
• Consider how the shape of the table fits your room—round and rectangular tables use space differently.
Armoires & Storage Pieces
• Check ceiling height and doorway clearance.
• Ensure there’s enough room in the final space to safely position the piece upright.
Rugs
• Use painter’s tape to outline the rug size on the floor.
• Think about how the rug will sit under nearby furniture.
• Larger rugs often help create a more cohesive layout.
Beds
• Leave comfortable space around the bed for walking and nightstands.
• Check for electrical outlets and baseboard heaters along the headboard wall.
• Consider how the bed will sit with windows and other furniture.
Preparing for Delivery
Once you’ve measured your space and delivery path, a few small steps can make delivery day easier.
Let the delivery team know about any special conditions, such as gated access, narrow streets, or elevator bookings.
Before delivery arrives, clear the path inside your home. Move furniture out of the way, roll up rugs, and secure pets in another room.
Taking a few minutes to measure helps ensure your new piece arrives exactly where it belongs, ready to settle into your home.
